Scrupulosity- Religious OCD- What is it?
OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) is an anxiety disorder that is the result of unwanted and uncontrolled repetitive emotions and tasks. As far as religion is concerned normal people are very faithful and involved in the activities related to God. But there are certain individuals who get extra involved in religious rituals which leads to compulsive behavior that is absolutely joyless. They feel that they must do certain repetitive religious actions or they are an extreme sinner. Now that’s scrupulosity or religious OCD.
There are a number of causes behind OCD such as Cognitive behavioral, biological and psychodynamic reasons. Scrupulosity- Religious OCD is a disorder that involves repetitive religious rituals or actions, which is usually caused by a person’s extreme feeling of moral guilt or due to some religious issue. A person suffering from Scrupulosity- Religious OCD mainly focuses upon religious and moral fears. This may include the fear of being a wicked person or fear from God if involved in any sin at all.
In Scrupulosity- Religious OCD a person starts thinking negatively on any sin and neglects the positive aspect of being religious. Yes, it’s very important to feel guilt over your sins, but once you ask for forgiveness from God and agree to not do it again, then you are free from that sin! It’s in the past and that’s how we as human beings can grow. Don’t keep looking into the past, just concentrate on the present day. Plus, there is a big difference between being religious and spiritual. I think that it’s far better to be spiritual than religious. Spiritual, meaning you have a great relationship with God and stick to His Word.
The treatment for Scrupulosity- Religious OCD is the same as it would be for someone with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. Such treatments include CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) and medication. Some severe cases require immediate treatment that is accompanied by different techniques. The sufferer has to do self-assessment and has to understand the real causes behind scrupulosity. A psychologist can definitely help the sufferer to realize that isn’t the normal way people look at religion. By adopting effective treatments one can get rid of Scrupulosity- Religious OCD and get freedom from all their misconceptions and start leading a rich and faithful life with God again!

Well it’s been a few month’s and I can honestly say it’s still not easy but it gets easier.
I can only control my actions but not my thoughts. I feel like I offend God everyday. I want to go to Church everyday, and receive Holy Communion without having sins on my soul. With this condition it’s basically impossible. I counter this by saying it’s not me, it’s my OCD and the Lord understands. I’m not sure about the drug thing yet. I’m still praying and doing research on other methods of treatment. To my Spiritual family in Heaven, “I Love you”, and please understand.
I find that my thoughts often influenced my actions, so it is hard not to have certain thoughts and not feel overwhelmed by OCD. If you get to the point where you start to feel like a nervous wreak you should really go on medication. In fact, you shouldn’t allow yourself to get to that point. Seeing a doctor now a days is easy. So many people have anxiety and depression now a days that it’s very common to go to your doctor for some help with it. Trust me when I say that you shouldn’t suffer with those feelings that you are having. Go see a doctor and get some help. Let us know how it goes from time to time. Good luck!
OCD scrupulosity is the worst. It can leave you drained and frustrated. All I want to do is thank and praise the Lord. Which isn’t a bad thing at all, it’s just so redundant. It also leaves you confused. I will carry on this way if it is the Lord’s will.
Hi,
Being a Christian myself I can say I only thank the Lord when I mean it. Maybe you should try to only say it when you truly mean it. It’s more natural and genuine that way. It’s Ok to go to your doctor for some help with OCD, because if you are constantly doing something like that then it’s just plain old OCD. Medication can really help. Trust me I had a touch of OCD myself, I got on meds for a few years and now it’s totally gone. It hasn’t come back and I’ve been off my medication for a while now, but trust me, medication does help.
